Tobacco warehouse in the central square of Komotini
It is a declared artwork and historical monument as it is a representative sample of the tobacco warehouse of the past century, important part of the study of Architecture Heritage and a testimony for the past development of the city of Komotini in the 60’s. The Lake Ismarida, formerly "Maternal or Mother Lake”, is located south of Rhodope, east of Lake Vistonida and within 3 km from the sea, particularly the bay Anoikto. It occupies nearly an area of 2.3 square kilometers. The maximum depth is 1.5 m and the average depth is 1 m. The building that until recently housed the courthouse of Komotini, was studied and built by a Dutch architect around 1870 for Sultan Abdul Aziz and his successor Abdul Hamid II on behalf of the Ottoman Administration of that time as Government House.The courthouse building was used as headquarters by the authorities of the Ottoman Empire until the July of 1913. Archaeological Museum of Komotini
The Archaeological Museum of Komotini was inaugurated in 1976. Its exhibitions cover the period from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period. The exhibits on display are in chronological sequence, without the breakdown of local excavation sets. The aim of the exhibition was to present selected and representative findings of the major archaeological sites, which can offer to the visitor all the necessary information for the prehistory and history of the Aegean Thrace. It is the work of the talented local sculptor Peter Moschidis and it is made of pure marble in 1930. The names of 63 people from Komotini, who were sacrificed in the Greek-Italian war of 1940-41, are graven on the lately added two big marble plaques. The Memorial is not used today but it lies deep within the heart of the whole city, because among other things, is an important work of art.
